Celebrate Parliamentary Law Month in Virginia
Each April, organizations across the country observe Parliamentary Law Month, a tradition established by the National Association of Parliamentarians to highlight the importance of parliamentary procedure in democratic decision-making. The observance also honors two major contributors to parliamentary law: Thomas Jefferson, author of the first American manual of parliamentary procedure, and Henry Martyn Robert, author of Robert’s Rules of Order, the most widely used parliamentary authority in the world.
Parliamentary procedure helps meetings run smoothly by promoting fairness, orderly debate, protection of member rights, and efficient decision-making. From nonprofit boards and community associations to civic organizations and professional societies, these principles help groups deliberate respectfully and reach sound decisions.
To celebrate Parliamentary Law Month, the Virginia State Association of Parliamentarians (VSAP) is offering a series of free and low-cost public workshops designed to help leaders, board members, and community volunteers improve the way their meetings work. Whether you are new to Robert’s Rules of Order or looking to strengthen your leadership skills, these sessions will provide practical guidance you can use immediately in your organization.
